Prijon has updated their well-known Neptun Laminate kayak with the new PriLite version for 2025. The Neptun Prilite is a high-performance sea kayak designed for medium to larger paddlers seeking excitement and agility on the ocean, while also offering enough storage for multi-day expeditions. The modern skeg design provides stability and manoeuvrability for ocean surfing, but is also suitable for inland lakes and rivers. The lightweight PriLite hull allows for effortless transportation.

This technical touring kayak is designed for experienced paddlers seeking performance on open water. Featuring Kayaksport’s latest skeg system, the Neptune offers a narrow, fast hull with a good rocker, allowing for excellent manoeuvrability without compromising storage capacity, making it perfect for multi-day and week-long expeditions.
The benefits of a skeg only kayak:
1) Improved tracking:
a) A skeg helps the kayak track in a straight line, reducing the amount of correction needed while paddling, especially in windy conditions or when paddling over longer distances.
2) Wind resistance:
a) It helps resist the effects of wind on the kayak, preventing the kayak from being pushed sideways (weathercocking). This makes paddling more efficient in crosswinds and open water.
3) Simple to operate:
a) Skegs are generally easier to use compared to rudders. With a retractable skeg, you simply deploy or retract it when necessary, and it doesn't require foot control for steering.
4) Less drag when retracted: When retracted, a skeg doesn’t produce additional drag, which can help maximize speed and efficiency when conditions are calm.
a) Better for long-distance paddling
b) On calm waters or when paddling in a straight line, a skeg provides stability and reduces the need for constant corrections. This makes it ideal for long-distance tours or when paddling in open water.
5) Lower maintenance
a) Skegs generally require less maintenance than a rudder system since they don’t have as many moving parts. This makes them a good option for paddlers who prefer a simpler setup.
The Prijon Prilite Neptune is ideal for medium to extra-large paddlers, including those with longer legs, who are looking for a kayak that performs well on both short and long tours. The material is nearly as durable as PE plastic, but with the added advantage of requiring less maintenance compared to laminated kayaks.
Comfort, as always with Prijon, is excellent. The kayak comes equipped with removable hip pads and an adjustable low backrest, ensuring you stay comfortable during long-distance paddles.
